Skopje is the capital and largest city of North Macedonia. During the Illyrian period, Skopje was the capital of Dardania and was known as Scupi. Albanians today make up about 33%-35% of the population of Skopje. Skopje's location on the Vardar River gives it a favorable geographical position. 

Skopje is about 245 meters above sea level and covers 571.46 km². According to statistics, in 2002, Skopje had about 668,518 inhabitants.
