The Stone Bridge is located in the center of the old town of Prizren. The bridge directly connects Shatervan Square (on the left side of the river) and Sarchana (on the right side of the river). Historical sources do not provide data on the exact time of its construction. Based on the material, style, and construction technique, it is assumed that the bridge was built at the end of the 15th century or at the beginning of the 16th century. The old bridge is built with quality processed stones, connected with limestone mortar.
Throughout history, the bridge has experienced several major changes. It suffered serious structural damage during the construction of the Limbardhi in the 1960s. The greatest danger to the bridge came from natural factors. The flooding of the river on November 17/18, 1979, caused the entire bridge to collapse.
The people of Prizren, saddened by the destruction of the bridge, mobilized, and according to the project drawn up by M. Gojkovic, engineer, on June 5, 1982, the works for its reconstruction began. The restoration works were carried out by the Elani Enterprise, under the supervision of the Prizren Cultural Monuments Protection Authority. The reconstructed bridge was solemnly inaugurated on November 17, 1982. Thus, the bridge naturally fits into the environment and continues to perform the function of a pedestrian bridge. Taking into consideration the genuine values of heritage, the Stone Bridge, with decision no. 2345 of December 31, 1948, is placed under the protection of the state.
