The Ulcinj Castle is an urban and architectural complex and among the oldest in the Adriatic. It is built on a small island on the Adriatic coast. Today inhabited mainly by Albanians, traces of the construction of the Castle belong to the prehistoric period, when Ulcinj belonged to the Illyrians, people of Indo-European origin.
The castle has been restored many times since it was built, although major changes were made by the Byzantines, Serbs, Venetians, and Ottomans. The oldest remaining parts of the fortress walls date back to Illyrian times. In the 6th century, two gates were opened in the Castle, one in the lower part by the sea, and the other from the land, in the upper part. The most visited places in the Castle by tourists are the Balshaj Tower, the Slave Market, the Palace, the Royal Court, and the Church of Ulcinj.
During the summer season, the Summer Stage, a cultural-artistic event, is held in the area of the Slave Market.
