Ura e Fshajtë is located in the village of Fshajt in the Perdrinja municipality of Gjakova, on the Gjakova - Prizren road, at the end of the Drini i Bardhë river canyon. The bridge is a cultural heritage monument, while the territory around the bridge and the canyon has been declared a protected natural area with a hydro-geomorphological character, covering an area of 199 hectares.
The protected area is located in the municipalities of Gjakova (around 74 ha) and Rahovec (125 ha). The existence of Ura e Fshajtë is linked to the legend of the sacrifice or walling of a woman in the foundations of the castle, the bridge, etc. The legend of Ura e Fshajtë is similar to the legend of Rozafa Castle in Shkodra.
The bridge is also known by other names, such as ‘Ura e Shejte’, ‘Ura e Shejti’, and ‘Ura e Rozafa’. The bridge and the village are called ‘e fshajte’ or ‘e fshejte’, based on the words of the woman during her walling. Additionally, the ballad about ‘Ura e Fshajtë’ is presented in several variants and names, as well as in many other brotherhoods among Albanians and other peoples of Illyricum.
The spectacular traditional jumps from Ura e Fshajtë into the Drini i Bardhë River, from a height of 22 meters, are the most interesting event of this adventure sport in our country, followed and watched by thousands of people. The tradition of jumping, once only for boys, is now also practiced by girls and has turned into an annual championship competition, which is institutionally supported.
