Butrint was founded at the beginning of the 7th century BC. The city lies on a not very high hill, which is surrounded on three sides by water. To the east and northeast of the hill lies the lake of Butrint, while on the south side passes the channel that connects the lake with the Ionian Sea.
The earliest archaeological notices about this city come from Qiriaku from Ancona, who, traveling to Greece, also stopped in this city, where he saw the remains of ancient buildings, parts of statues, and copied some inscriptions that are now lost.
As a result of many years of excavations, several historical periods and monuments have come to light in Butrint, such as: the Castle, the Theatre, the Agora, the Portico, the Temples, the Great Basilica, the Baptistery, etc. Today, Butrint is in very good condition and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage.
